From wood stove to pellet fire?
If you have an old fireplace in your living room and have realised that, despite consuming a lot of wood, it fails to heat your home, you can start thinking about putting a pellet-fired stove in the existing structure.
A pellet stove allows you to restore your old fireplace, using a pipe in the existing flue. And as you might imagine, all the required construction work is kept to a minimum. Pretty convenient.
These are the benefits you will immediately notice when you convert your wood-burning fireplace to a pellet stove
No more need to put wood in the firebox once an hour to keep the fire going. Very convenient, just relax.
Moreover, as with all pellet-powered products, using a pellet stove is very convenient: once you have made your settings, the pellet stove will automatically load the exact amount of fuel needed to meet your request. All you have to do is fill the reservoir and it will do the rest. That’s pretty convenient, don’t you think?
Of course, you need to know how to choose the best pellets. If you use poor-quality pellets, the benefits and performance of your pellet stove will be severely limited.
If you don’t know what to do, read the article we wrote on choosing the best pellets, you will find a lot of useful information.
You can programme automatic switching on and off.
Have you ever woken up early in the morning and had to have breakfast in the cold? Traditional heating systems, even if you switch them on as soon as you wake up, take time to reach the set temperature and heat the room. Only when you are about to leave is it warmed up.
Pellet fireplaces come with programmable switch-on: thanks to a remote control with LCD display or the display on the fireplace, you can set automatic switch-on and switch-off times, through daily, weekly and weekend programming. Going back to our example, this means that you can set automatic switching on times from Monday to Friday, at the time you want. So you can have your pellet stove switched on an hour before you wake up: having breakfast in a warm room becomes a totally different experience.
Dirty water also puts out fire
While we at Duroflame are naturally very enthusiastic about the pellet stove, we cannot deny that the wood-burning stove has some pleasant characteristics.
There is something romantic about a burning wood-burning stove, creating an intense atmosphere. The uncontrolled flames bring particularly direct heat.
Wood is a cheap fuel. A cubic metre of firewood is relatively cheap and almost every hardware store sells it. Want to stoke up even cheaper? Then you can choose to split wood yourself. Do bear in mind the drying time.
Characteristic smell of wood: Burning firewood logs has a distinctive smell that spreads throughout the house.
Cheap to buy: A wood stove is relatively cheaper to buy than other heating systems.
However, this is offset by some decisive disadvantages:
A burning wood stove produces a lot of smoke: Burning logs can cause smoke. Especially if it is windless, this can linger in the neighbourhood. This can cause nuisance to neighbours.
Harmful substances: When wood is burned, harmful substances are produced, including large quantities of fine dust. This can worsen air quality considerably. It is therefore uncertain what future the wood-burning stove has as heating in the Netherlands.
More work: A wood-burning stove generally requires more work than other stoves. Think for instance of splitting, stacking, drying and lifting the wood inside. A wood stove also needs regular maintenance.

The one who wants fire must endure the smoke
Okay, but then what are the disadvantages of a pellet stove?
Power consumption: To run, a pellet stove consumes power. Of course, this is offset by the higher efficiency of a pellet stove and the savings on heating costs.
However, the benefits are decisive:
The pellet stove is the easiest wood-fired stove available
It doesn’t get more efficient than a pellet stove
Pellets are sustainable sawdust
Fewer emissions
Heating with pellets is cheaper
